VPN setup Instructions based on Microsoft Windows

The VPN Protocol we use for standard VPN access is: Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) .


These instructions based on Microsoft Windows 7. Please adapt for your own operating system/device.

  • Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center
If you can't see "Network and Sharing Center" within the control panel page then look for

the words "view by" at the top right of the box and then set the drop down just to the right
as small icons.

  • Now click Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network
  • Select Connect to a Workplace. Click Next. In the following window, choose Use my Internet Connection (VPN).
  • In the Internet address box enter vpn.2020media.net.uk
  • Tick the box don't connect now, just set it up so I can connect later. Click next. 
  • In the dialogue box enter the login credentials given in your account credentials document.
  • Tick remember password. 
  • Leave Domain (optional) box blank. 
  • Click Create.

You should see a screen saying "The connection is ready to use". If so click Close.
Now go back to Control Panel> Network and Sharing Center. (You may already be there. Check in the status bar.)

  • Click on change adaptor settions in the top left.
  • You should now see the VPN Connection. If so Right Click and select properties.
  • Select the Security tab
  1. click on the Type of VPN select Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
  2. click on the Data encryption select No encryption Allowed (for better performance when on a private internet connection - )
  3. select Allow these protocols Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol and Microsoft CHAP Version v2
  • Make sure Automatically use my Windows login name is unticked.
  • Next select the Networking tab.
  1. Uncheck Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing and Internet Version 6.
  2. Ensure Internet Version 4 is ticked.
  • Press OK.

Now go back to Control Panel> Network and Sharing Center

Click on the VPN connection. A dialogue box will open. Click Connect.


If all is well it will now connect. Test by going Google and entering "what is my ip
address". You should get an answer like "212.124.xxx.xxx"
